The plugin can run existing Rack Extensions but can't host VSTs itself, sadly - so any Combinator patches you've made in the DAW involving third-party plugins can't be pulled across. There's no way to transfer existing Reason projects across to the Rack Plugin, either, which is a slight shame. The combination of Reason's unique mode of operation and VST support will be a major change and will surely find more and more followers. VST plugins will be available in Reason 9.5 directly in the Reason rack (found in the new Plugin Rack Device), by simply drag the installed VST into the virtual rack. There's also a Manage Plugins option under Window in the Reason toolbar where you can view all plugins recognized by Reason. If there were any issues with the plugin it will be listed but disabled. Keep in mind that VST3 and AU plugins will not be recognized as well as 32 bit VSTs without a wrapper.
Reason 9.5 has been announced by Propellerhead. VST plugins are coming to Reason, with the workflow of Reason as you know it. While currently Reason 9.5 is still in beta release, you can sign up for beta testing on the Propellerhead main website.
Reason 9.5 VST in Reason
A feature that has been requested for a long time, Reason 9.5 will support VST plugins. The way it works is that Reason sniffs out the installed plugins you have. And they will show up in your instrument sections. As shown in the following picture:
In this case it is demonstrated that an instance of Serum is being dragged in to the Reason Rack. At that point it will show up a native Reason Device (the VST Wrapper). This VST wrapper allows you to plug in Gate CV / Note CV like you used to do in any instrument of Reason.
When done so, you can later on program different CV controllers using the CV programmer. This allows you to control external settings inside the VST using external Control voltages.
In theory, you press the 'learn' button, then go back to the VST plugin. Drag the knob you want to control, and it is all set. It works similar as learn from midi in FL Studio for instance.
So from that angle it should work similar as lets say, programming a combinator. But in this particular case it is a VST you are controlling with in Reason itself! Which is freaking awesome!

Reason 9.5 releases on 29 may 2017
While currently the latest version is still in beta, the final version will release on 29 may 2017. This upgrade will be free for Reason 9 full users and Reason 9 essential users.

Absolutely not! Reason now supports two plugin formats and Rack Extensions will remain a key Reason technology. In fact, combining VSTs and Rack Extensions open up fantastic music making possibilities! Having VSTs in the rack will let us focus our development of the Rack Extension platform even more.
Will Reason 9.5 support all VST plugins?
Reason's VST implementation is based on VST 2.4. Any 2.4 compliant instrument or effect plugin (that's just about every VST out there) will work in Reason.
Can I use VSTs with other Reason devices?
Sure! In that regard, there is no difference between VSTs and other Reason devices. Play them with Players, put them in combinators, add Reason effects, patch audio and CV to them - just like you always do in Reason. The only difference is that the VST plugins open in a separate window.
How are VSTs used in Reason 9.5?
Reason will find any VST plugin that you have installed on your computer. The VST plugins can then be found among Reason's own devices and Rack Extensions in the browser. Drag your desired instrument or effect to the rack and it's there! VST plugins live inside the new plugin host device in the rack. This is where you can route audio and CV and open the plugin's own window.
How does the delay compensation work?
Some effects in a signal chain will introduce delay in the timing. With the delay compensation on, Reason will calculate the total delay in each signal path and adjust the timing of each discrete signal path accordingly, to assure perfectly timed, phase correct playback. The adjustment is automatic but can also be set manually for each mixer channel.
